About to Be Fired – A New CSM’s Struggles at a Healthcare Startup

Starting a new role as a Customer Success Manager (CSM) at a promising healthcare startup seemed like a dream come true. Instead of thriving, I found myself struggling to keep up, feeling out of my depth, and fearing for my job security.

Challenges Faced

Lack of Training and Onboarding From day one, it was clear that the company’s onboarding process was an afterthought. There was no structured training on the app’s features or the nuances of client management in the healthcare sector. I was left to figure things out on my own, piecing together fragmented information from scattered documents and hurried conversations.

Internal Inefficiencies The development team was disorganized, with unresolved tickets piling up and no clear prioritization process. Clients’ issues often went unanswered for weeks, leaving me to manage their frustration with little support.

Unclear Role Expectations My role as a CSM blurred uncomfortably with sales responsibilities. I was asked about sales figures during meetings, despite having no involvement in the sales pipeline. This lack of clarity made it impossible to focus on my primary responsibilities.
